London’s tourist economy is experiencing a remarkable recovery as recent research reveals a surge in post-pandemic visitor numbers. According to City Hall’s study, flight bookings and international arrivals in the capital have shown a significant increase since 2019. It is projected that in 2023, London will welcome two million more visitors from around the world compared to the previous year, resulting in an additional £674 million in revenue.
The revival of London’s music and entertainment scene also played a vital role in its recent success. A series of popular shows and the release of movies like Barbie and Oppenheimer contributed to an immensely successful July. Flight bookings for the first half of 2023 are well above the 2019 average, with international arrivals up by 19% in April and 15% in May, compared to the same months in 2019.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed his delight, stating that the capital is thriving again with tourists and locals alike enjoying the fantastic attractions the city has to offer. The cultural scene remains at the heart of the city’s recovery, with renowned theaters, venues, galleries, and museums playing a significant role.
The Natural History Museum was among the most popular indoor attractions in the UK for two consecutive years, attracting over 4.6 million visitors in 2022. Their exhibition, “Titanosaur: Life as the Greatest Dinosaur,” featuring Patagotitan mayorum, drew considerable excitement and engagement from visitors, emphasizing the importance of preserving these magnificent creatures.
Since the opening of the Elizabeth Line in May 2022, nearly 200 million trips have been made, providing a substantial boost to the capital’s entertainment, leisure, and cultural hotspots.
The mayor’s “Let’s Do London” campaign, aimed at enticing both Londoners and tourists back to the city’s attractions, contributed an estimated £346 million and brought 850,000 additional overnight visitors.
Visit England’s recent report indicated a remarkable 141% increase in visitor numbers to London’s attractions in 2022 compared to 2021, making it the region with the highest growth in the UK. Furthermore, London became Europe’s most popular destination in 2022, with overnight stays increasing by 131.5%.
Bernard Donoghue OBE, head of the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA), confirmed that London has indeed made a strong comeback, as demonstrated by the impressive visitor figures for the city’s top attractions.
Looking ahead, there are still exciting events to come in London this summer, including the famous Notting Hill Carnival and the All Points East Festival in Victoria Park, headlined by Stormzy, The Strokes, and Dermot Kennedy. Additionally, London Fashion Week in September will showcase the best local and international designers and creatives.
